Every person who is in love knows a wonderful holiday called St. Valentine’s Day. This day is familiar to everybody who loves, has serious relationships or just passion to somebody. This is a very important holiday when people have a chance to express their feelings to those who they are in love with. In this they give presents, cards, soft toys and of course hearts of all kinds. This is the best day to have dates and to give marriage offers. But why is this holiday celebrated in so many countries and is so popular everywhere? May be the history of this holiday will clarify the situation for you.
This popular holiday took the name of a famous saint Valentine. He was a very mysterious person and his name is covered with real darkness. The holiday unites the traditions of both Christians and Romans, and they all think St. Valentine to be their hero and celebrate this romantic holiday in February. But there were at least three Valentines who could give the name to the holiday, and all three opinions have a right for existence.
One legend, which is known to many people, is that Valentine was a priest, who lived in Rome in the third century. Emperor Claudius II, who ruled the country at that time, decided to forbid young men to get married, because better soldiers came out of those men, who had no wives and children. Valentine was eager to help young people and married them secretly, thus ignoring Claudius’ order. When it came into the open, Valentine was perished, and since then the wonderful legend about him exists.
The other legend says that that Valentine was a young man, who was in prison and fell in love with a beautiful daughter of a captor. She was in love with him too and secretly visited him there. So that the first love message was sent by Valentine himself, not by anybody else. Afterwards Valentine became famous, when he assisted Christians to run away from Roman prisons.
Before the death Valentine sent to his beloved a love letter and the signature was “From your Valentine”. This wonderful phrase is still used by the people in their holiday cards.
This was the history of St. Valentine’s Day. Though this holiday is still under mysterious darkness and there are only legends about its origin, it’s clear that a brave, passionate, kind-hearted and romantic saint called Valentine gave birth to it.
